Now available from Tronixlabs Australia is this neat FTDI breakout board - a simple and inexpensive method for rock-solid USB to serial conversion at both 5V and 3.3V. 

The pinout of this board matches the usual FTDI cables so it will work with official Arduino and cloned 5V/3V Arduino boards. 

It can also be used for general serial applications. The major difference with this board is that it brings out the DTR pin as opposed to the RTS pin of the FTDI cable. The DTR pin allows an Arduino target to auto-reset when a new Sketch is downloaded. This is a really nice feature to have and allows a sketch to be downloaded without having to hit the reset button. This board will auto reset any Arduino board that has the reset pin brought out to a 6-pin connector.

The pins labeled BLK and GRN correspond to the colored wires on the FTDI cable. The black wire on the FTDI cable is GND, green is CTS. Use these BLK and GRN pins to align the FTDI basic board with your Arduino target. This board has TX and RX LEDs that make it a bit better to use over the FTDI cable. You can actually see serial traffic on the LEDs to verify if the board is working. 

This uses a genuine FTDI chip! If you're looking for a Sparkfun DEV-09716 or DEV-09873 - this is your replacement for both in the one board.

FTDI Driver Installaiton Instructions for Apple MacOS users

First, check your version of MacOS. To do this, select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu (top-left!). Determine your MacOS version number from the resulting box, for example:


If you are using MacOS with a version number below 10.9, download and install this driver package.

If you are using a later version of MacOS - from 10.9 onwards, then the FTDI driver installation process is different. Please complete the following steps:

First, you need to disable kext driver signing. To do this:

  1. Reboot and press CMD+R immediately after reboot to enter MacOS Recovery Mode
  2. Open Terminal from Recovery mode
  3. Run the command "csrutil enable --without kext" as shown in the image below
  4. then reboot from the menu bar options


Now you can downlaod and install the FTDI driver. Download and install this driver package.
